Thomas Verny

Dr. Thomas Verny

Research proves music played to the unborn child helps to:

  • facilitate intellectual development
  • engage the baby's attention
  • develop learning, language and memory skills
  • stimulate latent musical abilities
  • communicate a mother and father's love

Love Chords features the music of Baroque and Classical-era composers Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Boccherini, Albinoni and Corelli, specially selected and performed to produce a relaxed state of mind, an uplifting mood and a readiness to focus and communicate with the unborn baby.

Thomas Verny, MD, author of the best-selling pregnancy book The Secret Life of the Unborn Child (with John Kelly) (Dell Publishing) and an expert in pre- and peri-natal psychology, and producer Sandra Collier have compiled this collection of classical music and creative exercises to provide stimulation, encourage development and enhance the bond with the unborn child to make every pregnancy joyous and fulfilling.

Dr. Verny is an internationally recognized expert in pre-natal care and has been featured in more than 200 newspaper, radio and television interviews including Oprah, Sally Jessy Raphael, Barbara Walters and Unsolved Mysteries.

Verny currently teaches Prenatal and Perinatal Development at St. Mary's University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. During his career he has taught at Harvard University, University of Toronto and York University, Toronto.

In 1974, Verny wrote his first book, Inside Groups, followed by the international best-seller The Secret Life of the Unborn Child (with co-author John Kelly). The Secret Life provided the first scientific evidence proving that the unborn baby is:

  • capable of learning
  • able to warn a mother of medical problems unknown to her or her doctor
  • able to hear and respond to voices and sounds, including music
  • sensitive to a parent's feelings
  • capable of responding to love
  • an active, aware and feeling human being

For more than twenty years now, The Secret Life has changed the pregnancy and childbirth experience for millions of mothers - and fathers. The book has been published in 24 countries around the world.

Verny's next two books, Parenting Your Unborn Child and Nurturing the Unborn Child (co-written with Pamela Weintraub) became invaluable resources for pregnant women. Each book expanded upon the concepts established in The Secret Life, enabling mothers, fathers and siblings to communicate with and nurture a baby throughout the stages of pregnancy and into childbirth.

In 1983, Verny founded the Pre- and Perinatal Psychology Association of North America (PPPANA, recently renamed APPPAH) and served as its president for eight years. In 1986 he launched the Association's journal, and served as editor until 1990. In 1987 Verny edited Pre- and Perinatal Psychology: An Introduction, a collection of eighteen papers from the first International Congress of Pre- and Perinatal Psychology. Verny is also the author of more than 30 papers in professional journals and numerous articles in the lay press.

Verny's books, professional publications and founding of the PPPANA and the Pre- and Perinatal Journal, have established him as one of the world's leading authorities on Pre- and Perinatal Psychology. He has lectured and given workshops throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, South America and Southeast Asia.

Dr. Verny lives in Toronto with his wife, Sandra Collier.
